Our Opinion

Family Guy discreetly makes a brief appearance after its break to give us an episode with an intriguing deep cut plot and a rather inappropriate title. However, as many devoted viewers will be aware, Peter and The Giant Chicken’s animosity toward one another has persisted throughout the entire series. You may therefore assume that they would be aware of the chicken’s name, Ernie, if they were discussing a subject with that much history. I understand their desire to tell a tale in which Peter sets aside his animosity to assist a person in need, but as the entire series has shown, Peter simply lacks that level of emotional complexity. He only begins to assist after Lois gives him a pep talk about how much he actually NEEDS someone to despise him. But even in the context of this series, I’m not sure how often the chicken truly makes an appearance. For a longtime fan like myself, I do enjoy an episode that delves so far into continuity, but it also seems like they kind of just threw it out there haphazardly and this was the outcome.

The Brian storyline was… intriguing? Since a significant portion of Brian’s humor revolves around the fact that he is a dog and still does dog things despite also acting human, seeing a new take on that humor was amusing in and of itself. However, there was a moment where I started to wonder what he was actually trying to do with it. It feels like the writers have found a groove they are okay with and have settled into, not trying to break out of it to actually risk anything, since the cutaways and odd reference humor are still on spot for the show being in its nineteenth season.
